We love that this group chose an issue that was very personal for their language arts PBL:
Here are a few more excellent PSA's focused on bullying that were created by our seventh grade learners during their language arts PBL:
Our seventh grade learners have just completed their public service announcements as part of their language arts PBL, and we're so excited to share them with you! We'll be posting some of our favorites, like this one, right here on the blog for your enjoyment, so stay tuned over the next few days!
Here's a fabulous example of a presentation from the seventh grade history PBL that our learners recently completed. Ambulai wrote a powerful poem about how the civilization of China has changed throughout time and performed it for us: "Forget the bacon - save your egg!" That's our eighth grade learners' motivation for the science/math PBL this marking period. They'll be designing a vehicle using the research that they've completed on vehicle safety devices with the goal of protecting an egg in the event of a crash. Here is a fun video that we created in conjunction with their science teachers to kick things off: We're excited to tell you about what's happening this marking period for all learners at CYMS. Your child's Science and Skills for Digital Age Learners classes are partnering up to begin an exploration of the impact of bacteria on our lives (7th grade) and of how physics can explain the effectiveness of car safety devices (8th grade) using PBL! You may find the attached project overview helpful in understanding what we are asking all learners to do, and in supporting your child during the project. As parents or guardians, you can discuss the project at home, encouraging your child to think hard and ask questions about the topic. Be sure to contact us if you have any questions about the project! Sincerely, Ms. Eaton, Mrs. Howell, Mrs. Hufnagl, Mrs. Koplitz Teachers for Skills for Digital Age Learners Mr. Heisey, Mr. Santoro, Mrs. Hughes, Mr. Ginter 7th Grade Science Teachers Miss Hopkins, Miss Beck, Miss Hanes, Mrs. Ludwig-LIneberry 7th Grade Math Teachers Mr. Santoro, Mrs. Forry, Mrs. Walton, Mr. Kazakos 8th Grade Science Teachers Mr. Sweitzer, Ms. Frese, Miss Beck, Mr. Wisner 8th Grade Math Teachers Mr. McManama, Mr. High, Ms. Veit CYMS Administrators
The science/math PBL is now in full-swing! Our seventh grade learners will be focusing on bacteria, while the eighth graders are researching vehicle safety. Here's a little glimpse of the seventh grade kickoff event: Our learners have completed the history PBL with some fantastic results! This group decided to create a hand-drawn video as a visual companion to a song that they wrote about how gender roles have changed throughout history: As we wrap up the history PBL, we thought it would be fun to share some footage of our learners at work. Our seventh graders focused on the driving question, "How have ancient civilizations changed over time?" Each group chose one of these four civilizations to research and explore: Mesopotamia, Egypt, India, or China. At the eighth grade level, students chose a topic and were challenged to explore how it changed throughout history as well as how it influenced our American culture. Their topics included gender roles, industrialization, agriculture, medicine, transportation, warfare, education, and communication. We're excited to find out what each group learned and how they chose to present their findings. That's the best part about Project Based Learning - each individual determines his or her own path to learning, and as a result each project is unique! Here is a small preview of how the process has looked so far: The presentations begin on Thursday and Friday - we can't wait to see the results of their hard work!
