Team T has been watching and discussing video clips of survival stories throughout history. Some of the topics were the Holocaust, Hurricane Katrina, Black Plague, Dust Bowl, Yellow Fever and the Donnor Party. The students completed the ZBL process by reflecting on what all the survivalist had in common and how they survived. They then had to reflect personally. Students either survived the Zombie Apocalypse or were infected! They had to personally reflect on that and if they would survive in real life experience. Please see some examples below.

Team T is participating in a special PBL this year. All core teachers have students working on a part of this in their class. Team T will have to SURVIVE or become INFECTED in a zombie disease outbreak simulation. The physical education teachers had a day where the students participated in survival tests. In science, students dissected brains and eyes! During history, students are learning about castles and creating their own fortitudes with the help of some mathematics. In Language Arts, students are deciding which artifacts would be important to their survival based on historical literature. Currently, students are working on researching zombie-like diseases in our class. The students and teachers have been enjoying this collaborative experience!
Our eighth graders are almost finished researching Newton's Three Laws of Motion and are working on gathering information on Safety Devices. On Monday, Denny Brasher, from Apple Collision Center of York, came to share about how vehicles are created. Students will use this information when it is time to create their own model vehicle that will have to keep an egg safe during three collisions!
Seventh graders started marking period 4 with speakers who shared how they worked with bacteria. Pamela Gay and Chief Deputy Coroner Claude Stabely shared how the body breaks down after death. Linda Spahr, from PSU Extension, shared about diseases that are spread through animals. Dennis Barry shared how hospitals deal with outbreaks of contagious diseases. Now students will begin researching both good and bad bacteria this week. Stay tuned for what they will do with that research!
Our students finished their Language Arts PBL projects! Below you will find two links.
The first is the Eighth grade top projects that were voted on for our Awards Show. These students had to take three common texts and write a story including all three. The second is the Seventh grade top projects that were voted on for our Film Festival. The students created PSAs (Public Service Announcements) about a topic that was 'near and dear' to them. As promised it is finally here! Click on the button below to see some of our exemplar projects from the History PBL unit. Happy watching :)
The 8th graders are almost finished their storyboarding and some of them have even moved on to movie production. We have the students complete storyboards to help them brainstorm how their story is going to come to life visually. It really helps them if they plan out each scene beforehand so that they can prepare and have all the necessary props, costumes, apps, etc for creating their movie. Below is an exceptional example of our students' storyboards!
The 7th graders were lucky enough to get advice on how to create their PSAs from an actual professional in the marketing field. Megan Feeser, a marketing director from Downtown, Inc, was kind enough to volunteer her time to speak to all six of our 7th grade classes. She demonstrated different techniques used in commercial PSAs and then offered her advice for PSAs on the different topics that the 7th graders chose. We are very thankful for all the wonderful guest speakers that have given us their time to help our students with the Language Arts PBL. We have even more guest speakers lined up throughout next week!
The students have just finished the History PBL (projects soon to be posted!) and we already started preparing them for their Language Arts PBL. 8th grade will be creating their own creative story by remixing story elements from two stories they have read in their Language Arts classes while 7th grade will create a Public Service Announcement after learning several persuasive techniques. Both grades will be creating videos that they will enter into an awards show contest. Parents, staff, and the community will be invited to vote on their favorite videos! We are very excited to see what the students are going to create!
To help the students start their creative process we had two local authors come into our school to speak about the creative process they used to write their own books. Beth Fowler, author of Ken's War, and Jeanne Moran, author of Risking Exposure, both did an excellent job of presenting! We appreciate them taking the time to speak to our young writers and help them through the process of creating. Beth Fowler's visit was also mentioned in the York Dispatch because she made a very generous donation to our library for the purchase of more books! 20% of each of her books sold during the month of January will go to the Middle School Library. Below are some pictures of our presenters. Beth Fowler is pictured in the first row and Jeanne Moran is pictured in the bottom row. It is the 2nd day of History PBL panel presentations and we are blown away at what the students have created! Keep an eye out for the blog post with examples of the students' creations.
